The Airports Authority of India or AAI is a prominent and essential statutory body that plays a critical role in the civil aviation sector of the country. Established on the 1st of April, 1995, this organization was created through the enactment of the Airports Authority of India Act, 1994. It operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which is a vital department of the Government of India responsible for formulating policies and regulations that govern civil aviation in the country. The formation of the AAI marked a significant step towards enhancing the management, development, and operational efficiency of civil aviation infrastructure across the nation. Prior to the establishment of the AAI, the Government of India had set up the International Airports Authority of India (IAAI) in 1972, which was specifically tasked with the management and operation of the country’s international airports.

This body played a crucial role in ensuring that these critical gateways met international standards for safety, security, and service quality. In addition, the National Airports Authority of India (NAAI), created in 1986, was responsible for overseeing the operations and maintenance of domestic airports within India, ensuring that they provided adequate services to the burgeoning air travel market. Recognizing the need for a more integrated and cohesive approach to airport management and to streamline operations, these two organizations were merged into a single entity in April 1995. This merger was formalized under the Airports Authority of India Act, 1994, leading to the establishment of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) as a unified statutory body with a broader mandate to manage the entire spectrum of civil aviation infrastructure in the country, thus enhancing operational synergies and improving service delivery.
